Preoperative information

  1. Make sure that you have medical aid pre-authorisation well before your operation date. Please note that authorisation is not done by Dr’s rooms, you need to arrange this with your medical aid yourself.
  2. Make sure you know what operation you are having and understand fully all about it — if not, ask to see Dr Greyvensteyn again before the day of operation.
  3. Make sure you have signed consent for the operation at the rooms.
  4. If you are taking any blood thinning medication, please make sure that you have asked Dr Greyvensteyn regarding medicine, if it must be stopped, and how long before the operation you must do so. Note that not all blood thinning medications need to be stopped.
  5. If you are diabetic make sure that Dr Greyvensteyn and the anaesthetist are aware of it beforehand. If you take Metformin (Glucophage) you must not take it on the day of the operation.
  6. If you are (or might be) pregnant make sure that Dr Greyvensteyn and the anaesthetist know this in good time before the day of operation.
  7. If you have any serious medical conditions (especially any heart condition), this may need a special check-up or preparation prior to surgery— so you will need to tell Dr Greyvensteyn and see the anaesthetist before the day of the operation.
  8. If you are on the morning list: Have a normal dinner and especially something to drink (such as juice/ coffee or tea) until 12 pm the day before the operation and then nothing to eat or drink after that. You need to be 6 hours fasting of solid foods before the procedure. You are allowed to drink some clear fluids (water or clear apple juice) up to 2 hours before the procedure, but nothing thereafter. Be at the hospital at 6 am for admission at the front desk or as arranged with you.
  9. If you are on the afternoon list: Have a normal breakfast and especially something to drink (such as juice) before 6 am on the day of the operation. You need to be 6 hours fasting of solid foods/fluids before the procedure. You are allowed to drink some clear fluids (water or clear apple juice) up to 2 hours before the procedure, but nothing thereafter. Be at the hospital at 12 noon for admission at the front desk or as arranged with you.
  10. If you are taking blood pressure or other routine medication — take them with a small sip of water as usual on the day of operation (unless you have been specifically told not to do so).
  11. Do not take any herbal preparations or medication in the two days prior to the operation.
  12. Take all your medication with you to hospital so that the anaesthetist can know what you are taking.
  13. Remove nail polish, piercings, jewelry, eye make – up and contact lenses before coming to hospital. Bring glasses if you need them to read.
  14. Preferably write down a list of your medical history as it is easy to forget when being asked by the anesthetist.
  15. If you need one, bring your hearing aid.
  16. Get a lift to hospital as you cannot drive yourself after the operation.

Please note:

Authorisation is not done by Dr’s rooms.

In most cases tissue is excised and is generally sent for histogical examination by a pathologist. This is an additional cost and is not part of Dr Greyvensteyn’s quotation. This fee will be payable to the relevant Laboratory services.

A proforma quotation for any surgical procedure can be obtained prior to surgery. This should be reasonably accurate (medical aids differ in their fees per procedure) and give you a realistic indication of the cost of your procedure. Please note that it is your responsibility to find out what your surgical procedure will cost and any financial arrangements should be made before surgery.

If you have any queries please phone Dr Greyvensteyn’s rooms on 064 411 3928.
